This installment of Weekend Writing Warriors focuses on Dexter, his wife Lilith, and their ill child Lillian.
“It’s simple and fun. Sign the linky, then on Sunday, post 8 sentences from a current writing project, published or unpublished. Visit other participants and offer opinions, critiques, support. Writers hanging out with writers, a good time with a great group of people.”
Because this novel is still in the editing stages, these sentences may be different from the finished product. This excerpt is part of a newer chapter I’ve written.
“Help me lift her, Dex!” Lilith shouted over Lillian’s screams.
Lillian tried to get out of bed herself, only to have a leg break under her weight. Her arm and several ribs broke in the fall. It wasn’t the first time such an accident happened, and it wouldn’t be the last.
“I’ve got her legs,” Dex said, surprisingly calm despite the circumstances. “Grab her shoulders. Ready?” One, two, three.”
Dex and Lilith lifted the frail girl with all the gentleness they could manage. Her screams reduced to whimpers by then.
Oh the pain! I love Dex's calmness, despite the screaming and the obvious anguish… he sounds like a stable character. Such pain, though… what a life for Lilian, whose not a stranger to such horrific accidents… wow!
Sad, very affecting excerpt. I can see your characters are doing their best but nothing can really help the poor child.
Oh my, Lilian's bones seem to break so easily, poor little girl.
